Experts say likely more than one cause for Florida blackouts

I thought it went pretty well," he said. “We were notified by FP&L and by the state, and we sent out notifications to hospitals and to the media."

Lee Sherifff's spokesman Tony Schall said that deputies worked about a dozen intersections.

“Nothing else really was impacted," he said. “We actually had fewer accidents than normal. People were aware and nobody freaked out."

Officials from Collier County Emergency Operations were monitoring the outage very closely Tuesday.

The agency will mobilize depending on what critical parts of the county and critical infrastructures are affected and the duration of the outage, said Emergency Management Coordinator Jim von Rinteln.

“We would have mobilized if it would have effected Collier to a greater degree, but it didn't," von Rinteln said.

EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes

If they're constantly paying out hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in bogus fines, whats the point? Any profits will be eroded by those fees. Windows is a Microsoft product. They invested their time and money to develop it. If a company wants to make money off Microsoft's time and effort, they should have to compensate Microsoft for it.To me Microsoft should just give the EU the middle finger and say "What are you going to do?" And what can they do? Not let them sell their product? I think businesses over in Europe would be pretty pissed. Fine with me too since then maybe they'll move their businesses over here to the states where we let companies make money on the products they work hard to develop and don't charge outrageous corporate taxes.I'd love to know what kind of fees Apple charges for its proprietary info.

Now he's preparing himself for the seemingly endless stream of donated home-cooked meals, clothes, formula, diapers and extra pairs of hands to stop. He said he knows daughters Rowan and Trinity and son Teegan won't be "flavor of the month" forever.

"The outpouring of help has been very, very surprising," Hagenbuch said as he sat in an easy chair in the living room of the home he and his late wife bought four years ago. "It's been from people I don't know or have never seen before. Sometimes it can get overwhelming."

Members of the Eagles Lodge in Three Rivers are hosting a March 1 fundraiser for Hagenbuch and his triplets. It will be the second fundraiser held in Three Rivers, where Hagenbuch has a job assembling axles for the Hummer H3 at American Axle & Manufacturing.

Fujitsu Shows 500GB Laptop Drive

Laptop computer storage is racing fast towards the 500G-byte level with Fujitsu becoming the third hard-disk drive maker to announce a drive at that capacity.

Fujitsu is accomplishing this capacity by combining three disk platters -- the magnetically-coated disks on which data is stored -- each with a 170G-byte capacity inside the drive. Hitachi, the first company to announce a 500G-byte drive, and Samsung Electronics are also using three platter designs.

The third platter increases the thickness of the drive to 12.5 millimeters versus most other laptop drives, which have just two platters and are 9.5 millimeters thick.

As a result the Fujitsu drive won't fit into the drive bay on many laptop computers, so its availability doesn't mean an instant capacity upgrade will be possible for all laptop users.

High Performance SEO Requires Fast Load Times

Many large companies assume that site speed isn't very important to the overall user experience. This is normally a result of the site's operational departments setting goals in terms of what they think is a reasonable range. This range can often be well over two to four seconds.

This may not sound like much, but if you add other network issues on top of this time, it can create a horrible user experience. For example, if you have a visitor from a small country on a poor dial-up connection you could see a load time of several minutes, in an extreme case.

More often, you won't see the several minutes load time -- or even hear about it -- because the user on dial-up won't come back. You'll be lucky if they take the time to tell you the problem they had with your site.

Arab channel shows kidnapped Briton

An Arab TV news network broadcast a portion of a video Tuesday showing a British hostage seized in Iraq nearly a year ago. The station said the kidnappers were demanding that Britain free nine Iraqi prisoners.

The hostage, who has been identified as Peter Moore, was kidnapped by heavily armed men in police uniforms in May 2007 from the Iraqi Finance Ministry, together with four of his British security guards. They were driven away in a convoy of 19 four-wheel-drive vehicles toward the Shiite enclave of Sadr City in Baghdad.

Moore, who worked for BearingPoint, a U.S.-based management consulting firm, appeared in a black and white track suit with a beard and looked as though he was in good health.

Al-Arabiya network said on its Web site that it received the video from a Shiite group who were offering the five Britons in exchange for nine of their men being held by British forces.

Document Format Battle Takes Shape

Microsoft faces a tough battle starting Monday at a meeting in Geneva that will influence how widely the company's latest document format will be used in the future.

Representatives of national standards bodies worldwide will attend the ballot resolution meeting (BRM) held by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). They'll be focused on revising the specifications for Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML), which the company hopes will become an ISO standard.

Although OOXML has already been approved by an industry standards body, Ecma International, the ISO designation is key, since governments look to the ISO when choosing technical standards.

OOXML failed to become an ISO standard during a vote last September, but it has another chance if enough countries can agree on the revisions.

It's all about engagement: Microsoft's new ad plan

Measuring the effectiveness of online advertising is a challenge. Microsoft Corp. hopes to meet that challenge in a different way from its competitors starting Saturday. It is launching Engagement Mapping to uncover all online interactions that lead up to a consumer actually buying a product. Microsoft says the new ad initiative will provide advertisers with a more accurate picture of how to plan online campaigns. The new measurement system comes on the heels of the software giant's purchase of aQuantive, an online marketing company, in order to compete more effectively against competition such as Google. Microsoft executives say that the “last ad clicked" measurement is flawed because it dismisses all prior interactions a consumer has had with a marketer's message. Engagement Mapping, on the other hand, can show how each ad exposure, on various platforms, influences a purchase.

A Path Worth Taking? The Prospects and Challenges of a U.S.-Taiwan ...

In recent years, the creation of numerous free trade agreements (FTAs) around the world has triggered a chain reaction, as countries fearing exclusion move forward to establish their own regional FTAs.

Taiwan, the world's sixteenth-largest trading power and the United States' ninth-largest trading partner, has indicated its desire for an FTA with the United States. Its technology-based economy and role as a doorway to China's market offers a larger potential trading relationship than any other country currently negotiating an FTA with the United States. Some feel that a U.S.-Taiwan FTA would send an unmistakable signal of U.S. support for democratic Taiwan. Others believe such a trade deal would complicate the U.S.'s relations in the region. Is a U.S.-Taiwan trade pact a path worth taking?

In honor of both March Madness and The Sporting Blog finding video of the horrifically soul-crunching defeat suffered by Memphis against Louisville in a recent C-USA title game, I'm taking nominations for a tournament. In the same vein as "the ur-tard" Bill Simmons' "Levels of Losing", I'd like to see your nominations for the most painful defeat any team has ever suffered. This is limited to actual sporting defeats, as including something like the Hank Gathers incident would most likely be a run-away winner. Events from all sports (Even NASCAR and soccer) will be accepted into this tournament. Right now I have a few examples that are locked into the tournament. I'm hoping for 16 or even a full 32. I'm looking for gut-wrenching defeats, be it in the manner of losing, or the result of that loss.
